Obama is not Satan

Radical Times by Henry Brown

The hashtag #ObamaIsNotSatan exploded on Twitter this week, thanks to the accidental(?) resemblance between Barack Obama and the actor who played Satan on the History Channel series The Bible. Folks on the right side of the political divide, including me, had a great deal of fun with it. Here's what I came up with (and stole shamelessly):

News from the Asylum - Valentine's Day Edition

Salemwood Elementary
What's the Valentine's Day equivalent of the Grinch? Todd Starnes reports on FoxNews.com that "Boys and girls at a Massachusetts elementary school have been banned from bringing Valentine’s Day candy or cards over cultural equality issues and federal guidelines regulating candy. Parents of students at Salemwood Elementary School in Malden, Mass, received a letter informing them of the policy...'We have many different nationalities, cultures and languages spoken,' Principal Carol Keenan told Fox News. 'Because of that we don’t honor specific holidays.'"

But doesn't she like Chris Christie? Conservative commentator Ann Coulter told Sean Hannity yesterday that the GOP should not consider "funny-looking" candidates for the 2016 presidential nomination. Well, I'm out.

Math Department. Two days after delivering a State of the Union Address in which he called on both parties to work together to trim the deficit, President Obama hit the road to promote a new entitlement, universal preschool. In a speech at a Community Recreation Center in Decatur, GA, the president warned that students who enter kindergarten without sufficient preparation "don't know their numbers."

In view of Mr. Obama's stewardship of the federal budget, it appears he's speaking from experience.

Preschool

Politico reports that "Bill Maher wants 6-year president term." Well, if that's what he wants, he's just going to have to run for election like everyone else.

Valentine's Day

Today is Valentine's Day - an occasion when people all over the world will spend time with those they love the most. In Washington, the White House disputed reports that President Obama wanted to spend the day by himself.

It is of course, a painful time for those who have recently lost loved ones. My heart goes out to them, especially to those in the liberal media. Their plans for a magical evening with accused cop killer Charles Dorner are now completely ruined.

Stay tuned for updates throughout the day.

Not listening. Reuters reports that according to a Quinnipiac University poll, "Americans are eager to hear President Barack Obama address the U.S. economy and federal deficit in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday." Meanwhile, in Washington, the president is putting the finishing touches on his speech, which will focus on gun control, immigration, and how he got Charles Dorner.
Tragic day. The New York Post reports, "The distillery behind Maker’s Mark bourbon is reducing the amount of alcohol to meet a rise in global demand, company officials said today."

It would behoove Maker's Mark to heed the advice of Sonny Bunch, managing editor at the Washington Free Beacon. His alternative? Instead of "diluting their product in order to ensure that more people have access to a crappier product," apply freshman economics and "raise the price!"

Senate Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told Fox News yesterday, "It is almost a false argument to say that we have a spending problem," and "The fact is, we’ve had plenty of spending cuts." Movie Review: Zero Dark Thirty

The climax of Zero Dark Thirty is an above-average action sequence which manages to be suspenseful even though we all know how it ends. Through the greenish hues of night-vision goggles, we watch highly skilled Navy SEALS execute a surgical strike on Osama bin Laden’s Abbottabad, Pakistan compound, killing the man behind the 9/11 Attacks.

But the events prior to the departure of the first helicopter to Abbottabad are what are really interesting about Zero Dark Thirty: a nine-year, not-so-surgical manhunt. The CIA operatives on the case, Dan (Jason Clarke) and Maya (Jessica Chastain), exhibit steely determination as they try to persuade skeptical bureaucrats to act on incomplete information that came from ethically-challenged sources. Some of their leads result in dead ends for their colleagues – in the tragic and literal sense of the word dead.

And sometimes they use torture.

Director Kathryn Bigelow doesn’t sugar coat. Most of the movie’s first hour consists of gruesome scenes of prisoners being subjected to “enhanced interrogation techniques,” including waterboarding. One CIA operative even manages a smirk when she sees Barack Obama on TV, sermonizing about how these techniques diminish the moral stature of the United States. (Incidentally, that’s Obama’s only appearance in the movie. Zero Dark Thirty is definitely the story of the spies and the soldiers who did the heavy lifting in finding and killing bin Laden, not the politicians.) Regardless of their effect on our moral stature, the techniques work. A prisoner cracks and gives Dan and Maya the name of the al-Qaeda courier who eventually leads them to bin Laden.

Of course, the question with any work of historical fiction is: is that how it really happened? According to then-CIA Director Leon Panetta, yes. In an interview three days after bin Laden’s death, he said, “enhanced interrogation techniques were used to extract information that led to the mission's success.” But Panetta’s successor, Acting Director Michael Morell, presented a more nuanced picture. In a letter to CIA employees about Zero Dark Thirty he wrote, “[T]he truth is that multiple streams of intelligence led CIA analysts to conclude that Bin Ladin was hiding in Abbottabad. Some came from detainees subjected to enhanced techniques, but there were many other sources as well. And, importantly, whether enhanced interrogation techniques were the only timely and effective way to obtain information from those detainees, as the film suggests, is a matter of debate that cannot and never will be definitively resolved.”

So we have conflicting reports and I leave it as an exercise for my readers to decide for themselves: was torture justified in bringing to justice the man responsible for 3,000 murders on that sad and terrible September day?

Top Ten Additional Obama Executive Orders

President Obama released his much-hyped executive gun control orders today, and they were a big anti-climax: piddling initiatives like “Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers” and “Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.” The president will have to wait on Congress for the big stuff like banning “assault weapons” (good luck with that, Barry).

Well, piddling is what Obama does best. No doubt he’ll do more of it. Here then are my predictions for Top Ten Additional Obama Executive Orders:

#10 Income tax audit for that guy that was mean to him in 10th grade.

#9 Michelle Obama fat jokes now punishable by six years in Leavenworth.

#8 New Obamacare mandate: extra-large suppositories

#7 White House staff to be issued those cool Che Guevara hats.

#6 Raise the ethical standards of the administration by appointing new cabinet secretary Lance Armstrong.

#5 In order to receive federal education funds, school districts must replace Pledge of Allegiance with Obama National Anthem

#4 If Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling, no dessert.

#3 In honor of Elizabeth Warren, September is now National Fake Indian History Month.

#2 Twenty percent increase in Snausages for Piers Morgan.

And the #1 Additional Obama Executive Order…
Special 150% tax bracket for all citizens named “Rush.”

News from the Asylum: Special Hurricane Edition

Hurrican Sandy Tracking Map

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for coastal areas in the mid-Atlantic and New England states. Asked for comment, Vice President Joe Biden called the orders “malarkey,” grinned idiotically, and laughed for no apparent reason.

In an official statement, President Obama said, “this is going to be a slow-moving process through a wide swath of the country, and millions of people are going to be affected.” It was unclear whether he was referring to Hurricane Sandy or the weak economic recovery. The president added, “I inherited the worst storm since the Great Depression.”

A Labor Department official stated today that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has made no decision yet as to whether the October unemployment report, due Friday, will be delayed as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The report will be the last set of data about the jobs situation prior to the presidential election. “We’ll decide what to do after we see whether the numbers are favorable to the president,” the official said.

Seen on FB: Just read reports that Hurricane Sandy is a "spontaneous weather event" sparked by a Weather Channel video on YouTube. (Thanks, JW!)

Also seen on FB: Just heard the governor on the radio say: If you have a gas-powered generator please I repeat please, locate it in an open area. <--- thank goodness for this guy, 'cause I had mine all set to go...under my bed. (Thanks, BR!)

CNN reports that 765,000 people are without electric power — and some of them aren't even victims of the EPA's war on coal.

What's the difference between Obama's economic policies and Hurricane Sandy? One blows and the other is a storm system.

All kidding aside, I hope everyone stays safe and dry. Please support the volunteers of the Red Cross as they endeavor to help those hardest hit by the hurricane. You can read about their efforts and make a donation at http://www.redcross.org/news-events.

Top Ten Barack Obama Foreign Policy Strategies

Obama bows to Saudi king.

Now that America is respected around the world again, I have to marvel at the skill with which President Obama brought that about. In order to gain insight into how he did it, I compiled a list of Top Ten Barack Obama Foreign Policy Strategies:

  • #10 Cement relations with our allies by returning a bust of one of their most cherished prime ministers.
  • #9 Further cement relations by being too busy to meet with them.
  • #8 Set timetables for troop withdrawals.
  • #7 Support anti-government demonstrations in countries friendly to the United States, but go out for ice cream during demonstrations in countries hostile to the United States.
  • #6 Never act without permission from the UN (permission from Congress is optional).
  • #5 Denigrate, during speeches in foreign nations, the moral sense and national vision of the United States (the “Apology Tour”).
  • #4 Promise our rivals that we’ll be more flexible after the election.
  • #3 When the Pakistani government imprisons and tortures the doctor who helped you locate bin Laden, ask for “clarification.”
  • #2 As a hostile country ruled by radical Islamists approaches completion of a nuclear bomb, give them a stern talking to.
  • And the number one Barack Obama foreign policy strategy…
    #1. Bow.

    To my Ron Paul friends

    Ron Paul Rally

    To my Ron Paul friends:

You know I love you all.

You know I think you’re the future of the Republican Party.

You know I think the GOP Establishment acted swinishly, and with little regard to its own interests, in overturning the results of caucuses, after you worked your butts off to learn the rules and get chosen as convention delegates, fair and square.

    Now grow up.

I didn’t vote for Romney in the primaries either. But Barack Obama threatens the freedom that is the core of our political philosophy. It’s time to work together to toss him out on his ass. If we don’t, the prediction I made in my novel Full Asylum of armed government CREEPS in black body armor kicking in our front doors may very well come true.

Does Romney offer everything we want? No. Can we tell the difference between him and Obama on the issues that are important to us? Absolutely. Obama has grown the government to a level unknown since World War II: Washington now spends 25% of GDP. Romney promises to claw that back to less than 20%. Obama has put more pages of new regulations in the Federal Register per year than any president in history. Romney promises to roll them back. And while Romney may not want to End the Fed, he does promise to replace Bush/Obama appointee Ben Bernanke with a chairman who will exercise some restraint in running the printing presses.

Will Romney keep these promises? I don't know. But we’ve seen how Obama governs; we know from experience what he’ll do if he’s re-elected. No, Romney may not keep his promises, but that’s the way to bet.

So please give Mitt your support. I know you won’t join me in taking Ron Paul to task for his classless refusal to do so. But at least stop tweeting that you’re going to vote for Obama. Obama? Seriously? The guy who spends his life trying to think up ways to get around the Constitution?

Also, please be polite. Do not support displays like this one that occurred on the convention floor yesterday:

Reports are conflicting. But as best I can reconstruct it, Ron Paul supporters, rightly angry that some of their delegates wouldn’t be seated, tried to shout down Committee on Permanent Organization chairwoman Zoraida Fonalledas as she began to present the credentials report. Romney supporters responded by drowning out the Paul supporters with shouts of “USA!” Because Ms. Fonalledas happens to be Puerto Rican, the net result was a lovely bit of video that the Democrats are already using to reinforce their fabricated “Republicans are racist” narrative. Giving ammunition to the enemy doesn’t help our cause.

I leave you with a question: Politics is the art of the possible. What is possible in 2012?

The failed policies that got us into this mess

    xxx
Photo source: Citizens Against Big Government
In an AP interview over the weekend, Barack Obama accused Mitt Romney and the GOP, for the bazillionth time, of “offering the same policies that got us into this mess in the first place.”

I’d like to explore that accusation.

Gov. Romney’s economic policies are based on limiting the size of government, reducing regulation, and restraining monetary growth. The Bush administration, in the years leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, did none of these things.

  • According to the Office of Management and Budget, during the presidency of George W. Bush federal spending grew from $1,789B in fiscal year 2000 (18.0% of GDP) to $2,983B (20.9% of GDP) in 2008. Growth in government continued under the Obama administration, with spending hitting a record $3.603B in 2011 (23.9% of GDP).
  • The administration of George W. Bush added an average of 73,400 pages of regulations to the Federal Register, compared to 66,500 pages under Clinton, and 50,700 under Reagan. Obama continued regulating at a record-setting pace of 77,100 pages per year.
  • We don’t talk a lot about monetary policy in our political discourse, but according to both Austrian and Chicago economics, it’s the real driver of both the business cycle and of bubbles like the one that created the mortgage crisis. According to Federal Reserve data, the money supply (seasonally adjusted M2) grew at a restrained 3.3% annual rate from the beginning of Chairman Greenspan’s tenure in August 1987 through March 1995. At that point, policy shifted. During the balance of Greenspan’s stewardship, which saw both the dot com and the housing bubbles, M2 expanded an average of 8.50% per year. Ben Bernanke, who was appointed by Bush in 2006 and re-appointed by Obama in 2009, continued cranking the printing presses at a 7.6% clip through September 2011.

In each case – fiscal policy, regulatory policy, and monetary policy – we see that George W. Bush did the exact opposite of what Mitt Romney proposes to do. And in each case, Barack Obama continued and even accelerated the policies of George W. Bush. Sorry, Mr. President. The failed policies that got us into this mess are not Mitt Romney’s. They’re yours.

    Movie Review — 2016: Obama’s America

    2016: Obama’s America
This movie is misnamed. Only a short portion of Dinesh D’Souza’s new documentary is devoted to what America will look like in 2016 if Obama is re-elected. The bulk of it is spent in the years 1961 through 1983, Barack Obama’s formative years, from his birth to his graduation from Columbia.

They were formative years for Mr. D’Souza as well, and rather than starting with Mr. Obama’s story, Mr. D’Souza starts with his own parallel one. Born in Mumbai a few months before Obama was born in Honolulu, Mr. D’Souza came to the US on a high school exchange program, over the objection of at least one relative who felt there was no place in America for those who weren’t white. Mr. D’Souza remained in the US after graduation, earning a degree from Dartmouth and a place in the Reagan White House. Along the way, he came to love the United States with an intensity that only an immigrant who has known poverty and socialism elsewhere can share. This brief autobiography allows a movie that was potentially very negative to start on a positive note.

The movie goes on to ask a question. Since becoming president, Barack Obama has done things which may seem bizarre: intervening on behalf of Mideast revolutions in countries friendly to the United States while doing little to help revolutions in hostile countries, reversing US policy in the Falkland Islands, giving only lukewarm support to Israel, returning a bust of Winston Churchill to the British. How do we understand these policies? What is the common thread?

To answer this, Mr. D’Souza sets off on the trails of the young Obama and his father, from Indonesia, to Hawaii, to Kenya. This part of the movie comes across as an honest attempt to understand a complicated man. The cinematography is gorgeous. Whether the scene is the Honolulu skyline or a Nairobi slum, bright colors burst from the screen. I learned about the fights that occurred between Obama’s mother Ann Dunham and his stepfather Lolo Soetoro – she was upset that Soetoro was becoming too successful in the capitalist system – and about the internal crisis that Obama faced on being told by his half-sister Auma that their father was an abusive drunk – not the hero Obama imagined him to be. This section of the movie draws heavily on Obama’s own autobiography, Dreams from My Father, so it is well-documented.

I liked the next part of the movie less. It covers Obama’s relationships with the familiar rogue’s gallery of Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, and Frank Marshall Davis. While Obama’s association with these radical anti-capitalists is well-known, the movie has little to say about their actual influence on him, and what it does say is pure speculation.

In its last minutes, the movie returns to the central question of how to understand Obama. Then it finally makes its predictions for 2016. These are all quite chilling; the one that stuck in my mind was a warning from former Comptroller General David Walker about the acceleration of government borrowing under George W. Bush and Barack Obama. We are on the path of Greece.

I did learn one other thing. If you go to the movies at 11:00 in morning, in order to get a review posted before the end of the day, the tickets are really, really cheap. It’s been a long time since I got into a theater for $6.

2016 is in theaters now. To find one near you, go to http://2016themovie.com/theaters/.
